OCR: ARTISTS DREAM OF MARS H.G. WELLS CINEMA & MUSIC In Roy Ward Baker's 1967 film "Five Million Years in the Earth," Martians land on Earth before man existed. They have animal forms, but retain their great intelligence. In 1978, Peter Hyams turned to NASA for his film "Capricorn 1"-specifically the difficulties NASA was having in its Mars programs. Three astronauts are getting ready to blast off for Mars when they learn that the mission has been canceled for security reasons. Actually, because of diminishing funds, NASA fears for the astronauts' lives. But US space authorities do not dare announce publicly that the Mars flight has been cancelled, so the astronauts are forced to simulate the Mars exploration in the American desert. Images of this hoax are then broadcast to the public. During the production of this film, the Martian surface was modeled after photos taken by the Mariner and Viking probes. MARS BETA1
